Dr Dan Bunstone

Medical Director

As a practising GP with over 15 years of experience, I have extensive expertise in conducting thorough capacity assessments across various contexts.  I can consult in my private rooms (Liverpool, Manchester, Warrington) but will often undertake home visits to complete assessments. My experience includes completing large numbers of capacity assessments for Lasting Powers of Attorney, Will creation, COP3, and PA14 assessments. I am fully trained in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and am thoroughly versed in the Mental Capacity Act, completing assessments both privately, and as part of my NHS role. This expertise is complemented by my significant court experience as an expert witness in both civil and criminal proceedings.I pride myself on delivering thorough, timely assessments and clear, concise reports. My Bond Solon training in Excellence in Report Writing, combined with my extensive clinical experience, enables me to provide comprehensive, court-ready documentation that serves the legal needs and the client’s needs in each case.  I also recognise the clear benefit to all parties in timely turnaround of appointments, reports and in answering questions or amendments that may arise.

Dr Edward Roche

GP and Capacity Assessor

I trained as a GP in Liverpool and Wirral and have been working as a qualified GP for over 19 years, 12 of those as a partner in a Wirral practice. It was there that I developed an interest in elderly medicine, care home healthcare provision and mental capacity. The practice had a higher than average population of frail elderly patients, and care home residents. This interest has led me to be commissioned to deliver bespoke training packages for care home staff to support them to manage the many challenges they face with their residents, including medical problems such as delirium, dementia, and considering mental capacity. I have performed mental capacity assessments for many years for numerous local and regional solicitors, both independently and for the patients of my NHS GP practice. This includes assessing mental capacity to decide on Lasting Power of Attorney, Testamentary capacity, and mental capacity to attend court. I am familiar with relevant paperwork including COP3, PA14, and LPA forms. I have also previously worked with Cheshire Borough Council performing Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) for many regional, vulnerable adults of all ages, residing in supported living in the community. Typically I would gather all required information via a face to face assessment with the client, in an environment that best supports them. In addition, I may gather other information in collaboration with the client, or their advocate, or solicitor, via telephone or video call, before or after the assessment. I am mobile and prefer to do home visits for assessments, or can use consulting rooms if necessary. I aim to turn around instructions for assessment and reports efficiently and without delay. I understand the need to be timely and detailed in report writing, supporting all parties to navigate what can be emotive and challenging, and time dependent circumstances. My reports are thorough and consider information on the varied questions and scenarios that the client may face, in order for me to come to a decision over their mental capacity.
